A Wonderful Year?

Happy New Year, Poets, Humans, and anyone else reading this.

I am not going to tempt fate by suggesting anything about 2025. All I am going to say is that I watched ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ all the way through for the first time on Christmas Eve (I tried before but got bored, now I am older and medicated
I had a feeling I was ready and I was). I enjoyed it. Though I thought, as I do of 99% of films, it could have shaved a good 20 minutes and lost nothing. (Yes, including Wicked).

What struck me wasn’t the suicidal man. At first it in fact was annoyance for him, not getting to live his dreams because his sense of duty called him to stay. I totally get why that would be frustrating. But what he built instead – was
fantastic.
Also, he could have ABSOLUTELY wedged in some holidays. Amateur.
No – the biggest message I took from the movie wasn’t that we don’t know the impact we have on others until it’s spelled out by an angel.
It’s that asking for help when his ADHD uncle lost his money would have saved him a lot of heartache.
But alas, he also had reasons to fear asking – because the greedy guy said he’d be ruined.

He forgot to ask his community instead of the big ugly boss man.
There’s mental health stuff, failure, there too, of course.
But that is what I took – that the community he helped, gave back with such joy when they realised he was in trouble.
(And don’t let your uncle be in charge of that much cash money until he is MEDICATED).

Asking for help has never been my strong suit, but inspired by IAWL I’d like to go into 2025 doing so. I don’t think I’ll ever shake the independent side of me, the one who loves time alone, and the sense of achievement, but I’d really
like to let her reach out and understand she a) can’t carry everything alone and b) she really needs help sometimes.
If I hadn’t asked for help last year this website wouldnt be here, nor would the gigs I performed at.
It’s a good thing. It’s a strong thing.
And if you need the reminder to ask too, please take this as yours.

I wish you a happy 2025 ahead – or at the very least, a calm and content one.

Much love xo
